The Weather Channel TV Network Announces 2026-27 Winter Storm Names

The Weather Channel television network today released its list of winter storm names for the 2026-27 season during America’s Morning Headquarters (AMHQ). This season’s list marks the debut of a refined naming approach: the roster now draws from 21 letters rather than the full alphabet.

Winter storms can form as early as October, and naming storms allows meteorologists, viewers, and communities to clearly distinguish systems as they develop throughout the season.

NAMING CRITERIA:

The Weather Channel will name a high-impact winter storm with significant snow and/or ice affecting one or more regions of the country. Lake-effect snowstorms and pure arctic cold outbreaks are not named.

BACKGROUND:

The Weather Channel television network began naming winter storms for the 2012-2013 winter season. Over 280 storms have since been named. This allows for streamlined and unified communication about the storm's hazards. A committee of The Weather Channel meteorologists oversees the naming process, which includes determining what constitutes a winter storm and when meteorological criteria have been met.

Viewers can follow all winter storm coverage live on The Weather Channel, The Weather Channel TV app, and follow The Weather Channel on social platforms.
